Food Inc.
June 16, 2009 – 9:56 pmI literally just got back from seeing the film, Food Inc. Rather than listening to me harp on and on about sustainable living and organic and pasture-raised eating, GO SEE THE MOVIE! It’s truly a mind-opening and inspiring experience, and it reinforced my beliefs that we all have an immense amount of power as consumers, specifically as food consumers.

One Response to “Food Inc.”
I watched the movie…definitely found it enlightening, though probably in a different way than you. In my opinion, the movie highlighed one of the primary flaws of capitalism, using food as an example. Basically, under the current framework of capitalism, maximizing profits is the sole focus. External factors that should be important to society as a whole, such as environment and sustainability, are often overlooked by these companies b/c these goals may be in conflict with profit motives. In my mind, the solution is for the government to step in and align business motives with society motives (i.e. tax exemptions for environmentally sound practices, etc). The most alarming part of the movie was that the government is actually doing the exact opposite now, by heavily subsidizing corn. This effectively disaligns business motives with society motives.
As Dave said, everyone does have a powerful vote when they choose what to buy. I just feel that the real focus should be on government policy, so that we as consumers shouldn’t have to payup so much to make that decision in the first place.
