I agree with Aliza, you do live in the best part of the country for making a sustainable lifestyle really work well and comfortable but everyone could make more of an effort no matter where they live.

For instance, take myself. I gave you all kinds of excuses in the past about not buying local or organic because of prices, my debt, workload, etc. The truth is ... fruits and veggies can be cheaper at a farmer's market and are much much healthier for you because they were just picked (not picked a week ago before they arrive in the closest supermarket to you), a win-win.

I recently watched a documentary, Independent America (on Hulu), which explains why it is so important to buy local. They mention that the best way to vote nowadays is not by casting a ballot but by voting with your dollar. Choosing where that dollar goes determines whether or not all the stores we buy from in the future are corporate box stores or local places with local people and local character.

The most staggering thing I learned from the documentary is the "multiplier effect" ... locally owned businesses that provide employment to local workers have 3 1/2 times more revenue stay in the local community than corporate chains (that is really significant). because that much more money stays in the local community, other local businesses get to spend that money at other local establishments also. local businesses use other local businesses services so the money keeps being exchanged and they all have a better chance of staying in business.

big box corporate chains have to send a bunch of their money out of the area and pay off all kinds of taxes elsewhere that don't benefit all the local communities they have stores in.

i can't even remember the last corporate chain restaurant that i ate at, and you're right ... man does it feel good!

and agreed about the CSA, i heard about that a couple months ago and have done some research. i may try to sign up for a spot soon, i hope it's not too late :/

I think this is your best post yet! It's so important to think where each dollar is going. We are very fortunate to live in a place where amazing food is grown and produced locally but I think everyone could make a bit more of an effort!
