Just Jump
November 4, 2008 – 11:08 pmSo we have finally come to the end of the long and winding election road, and we have ourselves a new President. Plenty will be written and probably already has been written about this truly historic day and moment. Instead of adding to that, I wanted to share with you a story I cut out of the Providence Journal years ago. It’s a story that I have kept posted on my walls in three states, captivating me whenever I re-read it.
A pair of crocodiles in South Africa may be regretting the big one that got away. Elmos Khumalo, 28, recently climbed a half submerged tree in a lake while fishing so he could cast his bait further from the shore. But when he decided to go home he noticed two crocodiles in the water by the tree- and they were looking at him. He was trapped. After five hours, the man-eaters began dozing, and Khumalo jumped on top of the bigger one, startling the two crocodiles. Khumalo, fish in hand, fled in the confusion.
In light of everything that our next President will be facing come January, I think this story has a simple and elegent message. Sometimes, you just have to make a jump for it.
Let’s hope he succeeds.
