i asked my mom about this a few years ago and i remember her telling me that she felt like time flies faster and faster every year she grows older.

overall in my experience of being an adult for 9 years, i agree with her. however, i also know that time has stood still for me the most when i worked 60 - 100 hrs per week for most of 2008.

happiness or the lack thereof and feelings about time are very related. when you are having fun (relaxing, partaking in some sort of entertainment, etc.) time flies. when you are not having fun (doing schoolwork, at a job, etc.), time usually doesn't fly.

when you are an adult, you feel like you have responsibility during work hours and not during work hours. you always feel like you are responsible about something. therein lies the issue ... i feel like the expectation of responsibility of adults in our society makes time fly for us in general than our years as a kid.

when you are a kid, you know that your parent or caregiver is seen as responsible for you. when you are an adult, it is all you. i think that feeling of personal responsibility makes us feel pressured to always take care of ourselves in the best possible way. it is something we can't perfect but we always try to get better at and thus this feeling makes us work at it.

time flies as we get older because we keep working at something that can't be perfected instead of being content with what we have or who we are

i agree that time passes when u don't want it to, just as much as things happen when u least want them to (ie running into someone u don't want to see) or things NOT happening when u really want them to. but i think we have this concept in our head just because when things don't go our way, they just seem to stand out that much more...on that note, maybe that is why we tend to take a lot of good things that happen for granted.
